Jigsaw puzzle pieces

Career Transitions are Like Jigsaw Puzzles

Career transition can be a lot like a jigsaw puzzle – but not in the way you might think. My husband and I were doing an intricate 1,000-piece puzzle the other day. I was focusing on finding similarly designed pieces and making them fit, while my husband effortlessly connected those sections to each other and to the puzzle frame. Although we both were enjoying the process, we were coming at it from two very different angles. Some people are better at seeing the finer details, while others excel at the bigger picture. The best results happen when people with different strengths and experiences work together and balance each other’s abilities.

Then, at one point during a long sit at the puzzle table, we realized we weren’t making much progress. We decided to switch seats. Guess what happened? As soon as we sat in the other’s chair, we started to find pieces in areas where the other person had been stumped. Different viewpoints, different solutions. It made me think of that Wayne Dyer quote, “When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.”

If you are feeling stuck in your job search or career transition, a coach can help you connect the pieces and see things from a different point of view. Contact me to learn more.
