I purchased this paperweight at a yard sale many years ago, and I’ve kept it on my desk ever since. What an impact one question can make! What does this question mean to you? Does it give you a sense of hope and excitement for the future? Does it remind you of how fear may have held you back in the past?
This question is what coaches call a “miracle question”: where you imagine a situation where there are no barriers, boundaries, or challenges. Such questioning gives you the opportunity to identify your dreams and goals and to visualize what’s possible.
In reality, of course, failure is a part of success. There’s not one scientist, athlete, author, computer genius, or artist who hasn’t experienced failure on their way to achievement and fulfillment. The secret is to believe in what you’re doing, to plan and research, and to have a support system of others who believe in you.
So, what would you attempt to do if you knew you couldn’t fail? Does it involve exploring a new position or a new career path? Why not start investigating your options to see what’s possible?
A career coach can help guide you and support you along the way. I can guide you as you take those first small but critical steps.
