Writing Your Cover Letter

Is a Cover Letter Really Necessary?

YES! While a resume gives a quick snapshot of your work history and skills, your cover letter illustrates how your experience and skills are the perfect fit for a position – while letting your personality and enthusiasm shine through.

A cover letter is not a repetition of your resume; employers want to see how your qualities and accomplishments specifically match their job requirements. A cover letter is also a great opportunity to show off your personality and your passion for the position you are applying for. The hiring manager will want to see not only that you have all of the qualifications and requirements for the job, but that you also are excited to work for their company!

Even more important, you want to make sure your cover letter includes all of information the job description requires. For example, if it asks for salary expectations or a list of references, include it. Failure to do so could disqualify you from further consideration.
