Why Company Fit Matters

You’ve found a role that seems like the perfect fit for your skills and experience – but what about the company? Is it a good employer to work for?  Researching a company’s cultural fit is a critical part of a job search, especially when you’re looking for professional stability and career fulfillment.

The culture of a company includes its mission and values, leadership style, work environment, and HR policies. These and other elements can determine your level of satisfaction and sense of belonging in the workplace, as well as the amount of recognition and compensation you may receive.

Before identifying a company’s cultural fit, consider the values and priorities that are most important to you. These can include:

·       Leadership accountability and transparency:  is there consistent internal communication to keep staff updated and engaged?

·       Professional development: are staff encouraged to learn new skills, take courses, and seek opportunities for internal advancement?

·       Employee benefits:  what is the structure for vacation time and sick time? Do they support employees who are caring for children or elders? What perks and benefits are in place to keep staff mentally and physically healthy?

To find companies whose culture aligns with your priorities and interests:

Start by reviewing “best of” lists. These may include:

· Glassdoor “Top Companies for Work/Life Balance

· TheMuse.com’s Vibe Awards” which recognize organizations that job seekers are “actively exploring, engaging with, and trusting as they navigate their career journey”

· MIT Sloan Management Review / Culture 500 list, which ranks 500 companies by employee reviews

·       “Best of” company lists compiled by local business journals and city media outlets (Boston Business Journal, for example).

To research companies to determine a cultural fit:

·      “Google” the company to find recent news, such as acquisitions, layoffs, new hires, research breakthroughs, etc.

·       Search for the company’s page on LinkedIn and Facebook and look for staff activity. Are they participating in volunteer days, speaking or attending conferences, or announcing promotions?

·       Look at the company’s “about us” page and “our team” pages. Are they dressed professionally or casually? Do most of the staff look young or old? Happy or serious? Do their bios include a list of degrees and published articles, or personal information like their dog’s name?

During the job interview, ask questions like:

-How does your company define work/life balance?

-What do growth and professional development look like at this company?

-What kind of events and activities do staff participate in (volunteer days, Friday team lunches, etc.)?

Every company has a unique culture and workplace environment. Determining the ones that align with your values, priorities, and work-life balance can help you attain the personal and professional fulfillment you seek.
