Quality Outperforms Quantity in the Job Search

Many job seekers mistakenly believe that the job search is a numbers game: the more positions you apply to, the more responses you’ll get. This approach, sometimes called “doomjobbing” or “spraying and praying,” usually gets little results, other than increased frustration.

Today, candidates are not only competing against each other, but also against AI application bots that can send one resume to countless postings at once – regardless of whether the person is the right fit. More than ever, it’s the quality of your applications that’s going to help you stand out and get noticed.

Your success is driven by:

  • how selective you are about the positions you apply to
  • how carefully you target and tailor your resume to those roles
  • how many people you know who are connected to those opportunities

Read Job Descriptions Carefully

The headline of Monster.com’s Doomjobbing Report sums it up: 48% of job seekers apply without reading the full job description [1]. Furthermore, 32% spend less than a minute reviewing job postings.

  • The Qualifications and Skills sections of the job description are the most important sections to read, but don’t forget about the “Preferred” or “Nice to Have” list. Those bullets list talents that could set you apart even more. Most importantly, abilities that are mentioned with “Must Have’” language mean those items are non-negotiable.
  • Don’t skip the “About Us” or “Company” section of the job description. There is often relevant information about the company’s mission, culture, values, work style, or employee expectations. Make sure the priorities of the company and the role align with your own priorities and values.

Tailor Your Resume and Leverage Your Network

  • Before applying, make sure that your resume reflects at least 75% of the qualifications and skills in the posting. This includes transferable skills, specific industry knowledge, management and leadership skills, and technical proficiencies.
  • Are you applying only because there’s a “quick apply” or “easy” button? You’ll be joining hundreds of other candidates doing the same thing. If you’re interested and qualified for the role, it’s always best to apply directly on the company’s website.
  • Is there anyone in your personal or professional network who is familiar with this company, or can introduce you to someone who is? The best way to make sure you’re considered for a role is through an employee referral or someone who can put your resume into the hands of the hiring manager.

When applying for positions in this particularly competitive job market, being intentional and strategic will get you the best results. While it takes more time and consideration, quality over quantity really does make a difference.
